PWPSD excited to celebrate Family Literacy Day

Students throughout Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) are excited to celebrate Family Literacy Day with fun activities, spirit days and books! Schools are inviting family members to join students as they celebrate the love.

Family Literacy Day, celebrated annually on January 27, is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

 

SCHOOL

EVENT PLAN

Beaverlodge Elementary School

This year’s school theme for Family Literacy Day is Reading Rocks. Students will be making bookmarks, and participating in buddy reading, jam sessions, a Guess the Staff’s Favourite Book game, and snacks!

Bezanson School

Students are invited to dress as their favourite book character and participate in a game of Guess the Staff’s Favourite Book.

Bonanza School

On January 27, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., families and community members are invited to join the students for an afternoon of reading.

Students may bring in a gently used book for the school’s book swap. Those who participate will have the opportunity to shop for a new-to-them book to take home!

Clairmont Community School

Camp Read runs in the school library from January 20 -24.

Students are invited to participate in different daily activities such as Scrabble Day (wear a letter and make words), guest readers - team up for reading (wear a sports jersey), dress as your favourite storybook character, and read with a loved one.

Elmworth School

To celebrate this year’s Family Literacy Day theme of Learn to be Green, Together, on January 29, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., family members are invited for a Camp-In in the gym.

Reading buddies will build forts using reusable materials brought from home. There will be a book swap, “Green” books, “Green” tips, a virtual campfire, activity books, and bookmarks!

Harry Balfour School

Students will hear from “Celebrity” readers throughout the week, and will have the opportunity to participate in a school-wide book swap!

Helen E. Taylor School

Students will participate in a variety of activities throughout the week of January 27, including the favourite StarBooks café!

La Glace School

On January 24, between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., students will head outside to participate in “S’mores and Stories”! They will enjoy a smore while listening to stories, families are welcome to join.

Please keep an eye out for individual teacher Literacy Day activities on January 27. 

Penson School

On January 30, between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., families are invited to Penson School to read and play board games with students.

Robert W. Zahara School

On January 30, students and staff are welcome to dress as their favourite book character. Families are invited to the Family Literacy Lunch, where family members and students will come together to read books during the lunch hour.

Other activities include Guess the Teacher’s Favourite Book, Drop Everything and Read (an announcement will come on and classes will be encouraged to stop what they are doing and read for 15 minutes), and more!

Teepee Creek School

On January 30, between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., families are invited to join the students and staff of Teepee Creek School to celebrate the joy of reading with engaging activities for the whole family:

Dress Up as Your Favourite Book Character: Let your imagination come to life! Come dressed as your favourite book character and share the story behind your outfit.

Book Exchange: Bring a gently used book to exchange and leave with a new adventure to enjoy!

Literacy Games: Take part in fun, interactive games that inspire creativity and reading skills.

Reading Time in the Gym: Gather in the gym to enjoy some quality reading time as a community.

Wembley Elementary School

To celebrate this year’s theme, Learn to be Green, Together, and for a chance to win a gift basket, families are invited to send in photos of themselves “being green”. Pictures can be sent to [email protected].

On January 27, students will participate in a book swap, and families are invited to share a good book and treat between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. 

On January 29, students are encouraged to dress as their favourite book character!
